How I work
I work with boards and leaders to equip them to lead change. A typical engagement starts with a phone call asking what I would charge to create a report. I don't generate reports--since for the most part they are unread, unused, and have had little impact on corporate life.
Moreover, what matters is finding what the client want to be different and then developing the direct path to creating that state.
I am always on the lookout for leaders who are committed to strengthening their skills and willing to take action to bring their vision to reality.
The exchange that follows is usually a 15 minute phone call in which I ask what is going on and what is desired. If there is a match between our values we will go forward. Alternatively, I will refer the person to someone who will be able assist.
If we both decide to go forward I request everything about the client and we establish an introductory face-to-face meeting with the leadership team.
That often includes asking the team to complete a short online survey to clarify how they perceive the situation.
As an organization development professional I am primarily interested in a transfer of skills so that when I complete my work the leadership team and organization will continue even stronger than in the past.
Working together can follow many patterns depending on the organization, the nature of the challenges, and the desired outcome. In many cases we begin with a detailed diagnosis of the resources and challenges. This is followed by identifying and removing the processes, ideas, cultures, outdated practices, conflicts, and other negatives that have held the organization back. The next stage is that of learning how to thrive in a healthy work environment.
Many groups bring me in for a keynote speech, a workshop, or for a leadership retreat as a first step. Thereafter I may be retained as a consultant. Increasingly, I have served as an executive coach working confidentially with senior leaders to advise them on strategic change.
